Thank You!

I wanted to send out a big thank you to everyone here for your encouragement and support. While we'd have preferred a better outcome, for us and for Sussex, let's not focus on the loss. What’s done is done. Instead, focus on what was accomplished together in six short weeks and the important work still ahead.

Lose a race, but don’t lose your enthusiasm, passion, or commitment – redirect it to help our community. I do believe that Sussex, Coastal and Inland Coastal in particular, is at a tipping point and that we stand to lose the quality of life that makes us want to be here. The problem with tipping points is that, by the time you notice them, the damage is usually done. So stay vigilant. Be patient – our problems can’t be solved overnight - but be insistent. And demand accountability on behalf of our community, our environment, and those who can’t fend for themselves.

I knew that this campaign would be a long shot. But with the help, support, and encouragement of this Facebook community and other good people, we built and ran a great campaign. It was intense from day one; what made it easy was knowing that there was a great team running flat out right alongside me. In six short weeks, we made a meaningful connection with more than 10,000 voters!

Each of you helped in whatever way you could, I can never thank you enough for that. I’m glad I decided to do this. It has been an intense and rewarding experience, both for what we accomplished and the bonds of friendship and community that we formed.

A heartfelt thank you to each of you!

Patti

Why Patti Drago Is the Better Choice!

Cape Gazette Endorses Patti Drago
Drago offers strong choice for Sussex Council

Editorials are considered by the editorial board and written by Dennis Forney, publisher emeritus, with occasional contributions from other board members: Trish Vernon, copublisher and editor; Dave Frederick, sports editor emeritus; Jen Ellingsworth, associate editor; Nick Roth, sports editor; and Chris Rausch, copublisher and general manager.

In a year of extreme oddities, Patti Drago has launched an aggressive write-in campaign for Sussex County Council’s Third District seat. In doing so, she has given the approximately 44,000 registered voters in the sprawling Third District a viable choice in who they want to represent their interests in Georgetown.

Without Drago’s write-in declaration, Mark Schaeffer – who beat I.G. Burton in a close Republican primary race – would have slid into the seat as an unopposed candidate in the general election. In effect, he would have been seated by the 3,164 Republican voters who gave him the 44-vote edge over Burton in the primary. The thousands of registered Democrat, other party or unaffiliated voters would have had no say. But after Drago was unsuccessful in convincing Burton to give those other thousands of voters a choice by mounting a write-in campaign, she put her money where her mouth is.

Elections are meant to be about choices, with energized dialogue among

candidates. We applaud Drago’s decision to give voters this choice, and we endorse her candidacy. County council members represent the largest constituencies of any non-statewide elected officials in Delaware. In this home-rule county, council members’ decisions – especially in land-use matters – have a greater direct impact on residents than those of other elected officials.

A retired chief executive of a major insurance company, Drago successfully navigated her $400 million-annual revenues company through challenging times while maintaining almost complete employment levels. She sees those skills as easily transferable to operation of a county with annual revenues of $150 million.

Drago has no ties to special interests. She sees the direct link between a thriving economy and a healthy environment. With her registration as an unaffiliated candidate, Drago brings further independence to her candidacy. In an interview, she stated: “Neither party adequately represents my interests.” In this time of tiresome political division, that brand of nonpartisanship is refreshing.

Voters in Sussex Council’s Third District would find themselves represented by a strong, thoughtful, reasonable and effective leader if they write in Drago on their ballots.

Patricia “Patti” Drago.

Your write-in choice for Sussex County Council District 3.

Sussex is at a tipping point with its unbridled growth that is pressuring our resources. We are losing the very qualities that make people want to live and work here.

We deserve better than a default candidate elected in a closed primary — someone supported by developers and other special interests outside of District 3.

I am not affiliated with any political party.

You deserve a choice for this November 3rd election, and a candidate with the courage and conviction to fairly represent the interest of all constituents. I can and will do that on your behalf.

This election is not about politics. It is about issues that affect us all.

Issues

Land Use

Let’s protect all property values with the goal of maintaining a landowner’s investment while preserving our natural resources and quality of life — without burdening taxpayers.

Water Quality
& Flooding

Let’s strive to ensure clean water, working wetlands, and healthy forests.

Economy & Jobs

Let’s develop responsibly, building an environment that attracts businesses and services — and creates good jobs.

Traffic Congestion

Let’s work to ensure that adequate funding is available to improve our roads as development takes place.

Your Property Taxes

Let’s protect our quality of life without raising property taxes.

Community Resiliency

Let’s make sure that we stay safe as our community grows.

You will need to write me in.
